About Botox at our Portsmouth clinics
Our aim at DermaVi is to make you look and feel fabulous in a consistent, subtle and natural way.
Our Botox treatments are to enhance your natural beauty, not change it.
Anti-wrinkle injections (Botox - or Botulinum Toxin) treatment is probably one of the most popular cosmetic medical treatments for management of facial lines and wrinkles in the UK and can be successfully combined with other rejuvenation treatments. The upper third of the face is where the best results are obtained although Dr. Shrivastva will often treat other areas if appropriate, including the chin, peri-oral area, neck bands and mandible. Anti-wrinkle injections are not permanent and always reversible, the effects lasting 3-6 months. Additional treatments are also available for excessive sweating, and is often used for recalcitrant cases.
DermaVi aesthetics is registered with the pharmaceutical company Allergan who make the original Botulinum toxin, in addition to the three leading UK pharmacies who specialise in aesthetic medicines. Patient safety and satisfaction is our number one priority at DermaVi. We only use the original version of Botulinum Toxin A - beware of any Botox Portsmouth clinics using cheaper versions that give short lived results, requiring more frequent top ups. Treatments are only administered after a thorough consultation and discussion of expectations and treatment outcomes. In many circumstances it may be that anti-wrinkle injections are not an appropriate management choice for the physician and patient alike.
What is Botox?
Botox (Botulinum toxin A) is a naturally occuring protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. It blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. Targeted use of this protein is an excellent way to soften and lessen the appearance of facial lines caused by repeated muscle movements, such as frown lines between the eyebrows or across the forehead, and laughter lines around the eyes. When tiny amounts are injected into muscles, they are relaxed, which causes any wrinkles to soften. It is not suitable for everyone however, and your doctor will discuss your suitability for Botox treatment. Some patients may even benefit fro a Nefertiti lift which involves treating the neck and jawline to provide a mild non-surgical lift.
How does Botox work?
Botulinum toxin type A relaxes the muscles so that they are no longer habitually contracting. A minute quantity of Botulinum toxin is injected into the muscle that causes dynamic lines temporarily preventing nerve signals reaching the muscle. As a result, the muscle relaxes and the wrinkles caused by muscle movement are significantly reduced or removed altogether, potentially taking years off of your appearance. This is not permanent but will last 3-6 months, and can be repeated.
Where can Botox be used?
Botox can be used on the:
- Crow's Feet
- Frown Lines
- Bunny Lines
- Neck Platysmal Bands
- Enlarged Masseter Muscles (Bruxism)
- Also used for excessive sweating.
How long does treatment take?
It usually takes between 15-40 minutes and there is no discomfort. A numbing cream can be applied to the skin half an hour before treatment. There is no downtime with wrinkle relaxing injections although there may be slight bruising which takes a few hours to settle. Most people resume normal activities immediately afterwards. Once injected, the results of wrinkle reduction treatment should start to appear within 24-72 hours, the main effect seen at 2 weeks.
Who should I seek to inject Botox?
Only trained doctors, nurse prescribers and dentists should provide non-surgical cosmetic treatments such as Botox. Currently people such as beauticians, therapists and dental hygienists with no medical training are administering Botox anti-wrinkle injections, even though it is a potent neurotoxin and they are not a prescriber.
Anybody can try to inject Botox, but producing truly beautiful and subtle results is an art form and take years of experience, and an appreciation of subtleties and nuances in each individual's anatomy.

What side effects may I expect following Botox treatment?
Most side effects experienced are short-lived and are related to injections (redness, swelling). Very rarely the muscle relaxant may migrate to the depressor muscle over the eye and cause the eyebrow or eyelid to droop (ptosis). As muscle relaxants are only temporary the effects will be resolved in 2-12 weeks. Medicated eye drops can be prescribed on these very rare occassions.
Refrain from touching the treated area for 3-4 hours. Do not engage in strenuous exercise after treatment. Repeatedly tense the treated muscle groups during the 3-4 hours, as the toxin works better in active muscles. A follow up appointment is provided 2 weeks after to review results.
Why does my best friend's Botox last longer than mine?
Some individuals naturally have much stronger muscle groups and more expressive faces, thus it is likely that the treatment will wear off sooner. Also, be aware of the variety of available Botulinum preparations available - some are weaker and less long-lasting than others. The original Botox by Allergan is the only product used at DermaVi Aesthetics. Other products are Boccoture and Azzalure.
